Inspector, Repair, Inspect and Repair ... EO or EI, EO and EI
An Inspector license (EO) allows you to do smog check Inspections but not repairs at a licensed Smog Check Station (Test Only or Test and Repair).
A Repair license (EI) allows you to Repair failed vehicles at a licensed Repair Only Station or Test and Repair station.
Many will have both EO and EI so they can Inspect and Repair vehicles.
What classes are required depends upon your career path, experience, schooling, and certifications. Below are downloadable licensing flow charts from the BAR website showing the different requirements. An experienced technician with ASE certifications in A6, A8, and L1 has the easiest path to getting a Smog Check license. They can take the repair exam with no other training required; just Level 2 for the Inspector license. We have found that in most cases these technicians have been doing driveabilty diagnosis and repair for a long time and do not need the basics that other applicants need.
If you have a certificate in Automotive technology from a community college or trade school that meets BAR requirements and at least one year experience at a registered repair shop doing engine performance repairs you can also skip Level 1 training and only take Level 2 to take the state exam for Inspector. But if you feel you do not know emission systems then we recommend you take level 1. See the flowcharts below for the BAR requirements for license applicants.
If you take our BAR Diagnostic and Repair classes and have 2 years of verifiable experience at a registered automotive repair shop doing engine performance repairs you also only need Level 2 smog inspector class to take the inspector and repair exams.
For the students that are inexperienced in engine performance diagnosis and repair, they can only qualify for an Inspector license. Once they get the required experience, then take the diagnosis and repair classes to get the repair license.
